DESCRIPTION: Students apply information learned during the tour to speculate on how a work of art was made.

OBJECTIVES: Students demonstrate an understanding of a particular artistic technique and learn all the choices an artist has to make to get an artwork to look a certain way.

PROCEDURE: Choose a work in the galleries that was not discussed during our tour. Write a step-by-step recipe on how to make this work. Mention the materials or combination of materials, tools and methods used.

  • List the materials that are used.
  • Explain what tools you would use.
  • Give step-by-step instructions (e.g. What would you do first? Next?)
  • Have students read their recipes to the group.

VARIATION: Have an assortment of tools, samples of materials or cards with techniques listed on them and have the students choose all that went into a particular work.

Age level: Appropriate for grades 5 and up.
Artworks used: Any paintings or sculptures.
