If You Were the Artist...

6-8

Subject: Synthesis
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Paper and pencils.

DESCRIPTION: Students apply their knowledge of the technical and expressive possibilities of art tools and materials to an imaginary artwork of their own.

OBJECTIVES: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between an artst's idea, the choices made in creation, and the resultant artwork.

PROCEDURE: Choose a medium or tool from among the ones discussed on the tour (ie. marble, air brush, wood, acrylic paint). Picture in your mind something you would make if you could use this material or technique to create an artwork. Write a description of the work you would make using the material or tool you selected. What size would it be? What colors? What would the subject be? Would it be realistic? Would it be abstract? Would it be similar to any artworks in the gallery? Which ones?

VARIATION: Have students think of a subject they would like to make a sculpture about (war, peace, space, a river, their friend or family, etc.) Have them choose the materials and tools they would want. Write a description of their imagined artwork. Ask questions as above.
