Scene Update

6-8

Subject: Order and Chaos
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3), (7)
Materials: Paper and pencils.

DESCRIPTION: Students write an updated description of a painting.

OBJECTIVES: Students focus on subject matter while learning ways that art tells us about a particular time and place. They also learn the role museums play in preserving culture.

PROCEDURE: Take a look at the scene in this artwork. Now using your paper and pencil, see if you can write down how that scene would look today. What objects would be different? How would the people look today? Would they be wearing different clothes or wear their hair differently?

Now that you have finished, turn your paper over and write down everything you think would be in this scene if it were today (you can also choose a date far into the future). What kind of technology would we see? How would the architecture look? How would the people look? (Focusing on the subject matter, discuss what they have written.)
