Subject:
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Paper and pencils; artwork write-ups.

DESCRIPTION: Students create two ads for a work of art, one with no information and one after they have learned about it.

OBJECTIVES: Students learn the importance of outside information in making a judgment about a work of art.

PROCEDURE: Imagine you are a writer for your favorite radio station. Your job is to write a 20 second ad describing a work of art and telling the radio audience why they should come to the Walker Art Center to see it. (Students should choose a work from the list of works on fact sheets.) (After students have finished their ads, distribute fact sheets.) Once you have read the fact sheet about your work, have students re-write their ad, incorporating any information that they think is important. Now, let's read both of your ads and talk about how you re-wrote them. How did the fact sheet change your ad? Did the information change your observations? did it change what you think is important about the artwork.
