International Exhibition

Subject:
Graduation Standards: (1), (2), (3)
Materials: Imagination

DESCRIPTION: Students act as a group to choose a work for an international exhibition.

OBJECTIVES: Students learn the importance of the critical process and how choices are made of exhibitions.

PROCEDURE: The Walker Art Center has been asked to participate in an international exhibit. It has decided to create a committee to choose the artwork for the exhibit. So, I'd like you to break down into small groups of about 4 or 5 people. Each group will act as the committee. I'm going to give you 10 minutes to walk around this gallery and decide among your "committee" what artwork best represents the Walker Art Center for this exhibit. The artwork that your committee decides upon does not have to be one that we have discussed on the tour, but since there will be a vote on the selections, you need to come up with an argument that will back up your choice. In developing your argument, use the skills of description, analysis, and interpretation that you have learned on the tour today. (After the groups have presented their selection, take a vote on which artwork they feel would best represent the Walker Art Center for the exhibit. Discuss the results of the vote.)

VARIATION: Do the same activity but tell the "committees" that they have been asked to choose an artwork that represents American art in the 2nd half of this century, in the 90s, etc.
