One of the standout films of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, Aoyama Shinji's
Eureka reconstructs the road movie. The film begins in Kyushu,
Japan, where a municipal bus is hijacked--only the driver and his two
young passengers, a schoolgirl and her older brother, survive the ordeal.
Two years later, the shell-shocked and silent siblings live as orphans
in the family home, and the bus driver is suspected of a murder. When
he buys a bus and invites the two children to leave with him on a trip,
a family circle is shaped that allows them to face the horror of their
shared experience and rebuild their lives. "A remarkable triumph of ensemble
playing and film expression, full of quiet but sure touches" (Sight
and Sound). 2000, Japan, 217 minutes.
