In the debut undertaking featuring the gravedigger Coffin Joe, the central character kills his infertile wife and embarks on a quest to find the perfect woman to have his child and carry on his bloodline. A morbid sort of fellow, he often spends time at funerals, expressing his sympathy to the grieving folks. Made on such a low budget that Marins accessorized the corpses with real maggots and spiders--he could not afford fake ones--the film's raw aesthetic complements the protagonists' crude murder plots. This highly original film, gushing with surreal flourishes, gallows humor, and Nietzschean philosophy, established Marins as a demented but brilliant filmmaker. Brazil, 1963, BW, 35mm, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 92 minutes.
