INTRODUCED BY VISHAKHA DESAI, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT
OF THE ASIA SOCIETY, NEW YORK, AND MEMBER OF THE WALKER'S BUSH GLOBAL
ADVISORY COMMITTEE.
Unsettling in its content, this first feature produced by the film-collective
Navachitra underscores an oppressive "system" that existed in the coastal
Indian town of Mutthuchchera. Salesmen made a profit arranging temporary
marriages between young women from the impoverished village and Arabian
investors, while the concerned minority of townspeople, including the village
monk, condemned the practice. 2001, India, in Kannada with English subtitles,
color, 35mm, 80 minutes.

Introduced by Vasif Kortun, founder of the Instanbul Contemporary Art Project,
Istanbul, and member of the Walker's Bush Global Advisory Committee. Banned by the Turkish authorities, this films tells the story of an old
Kurd left on his own after his village is cleared by the Turkish troops.
Ax is a pearl of simplicity, controversial and daring in its subject
matter, poignantly exploring themes of absence and loss. The film has been
showered with prizes at various short film festivals. 1999, Turkey, in Turkish
and Kurdish with English subtitles, color, 16mm, 27 minutes.
