Girls Can't Swim

FILMING DESIRE: A JOURNEY THROUGH WOMEN'S CINEMA (FILMER LE DÉSIR)
DIRECTED BY MARIE MANDY
Challenging the colloquial concept of the "woman's picture," internationally esteemed directors--including Agnès Varda, Doris Dörrie, Deepa Mehta, Catherine Breillat, and Jane Campion--discuss their approaches to expressing desire, sexuality, and the female body on film. A revealing collection of provocations and responses, the film cuts between the artists' comments and illustrative clips from their work. 2000, France, color and B/W, video, in English, French, and German with English subtitles, 60 minutes.

GIRLS CAN'T SWIM (LES FILLES NE SAVENT PAS NAGER)
DIRECTED BY ANNE-SOPHIE BIROT
In her feature-film debut, Anne-Sophie Birot takes a perceptive and subtle look at a friendship between two 15-year-old girls as they begin to grow apart. At first alternating between the girls' individual experiences, the film follows them through their holiday reunion as jealousy turns the relationship ugly. Girls Can't Swim is anchored by fine lead performances, especially from Islid Le Besco, who is "reminiscent of the young Bardot, although she's a much more confident and emotional performer" (The Village Voice). 2000, France, color, 35mm, in French with English subtitles, 101 minutes.
