THE LAST SEPTEMBER

Directed by Deborah Warner
Set in County Cork, Ireland, in 1920, this film is a portrait of the end of an era of British rule. Lord and Lady Naylor (Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith) belong to the Anglo-Irish aristocracy know as the Ascendancy, whose way of life--moneyed, graceful, essentially feudal--is fast coming to a close. A love triangle between their young niece, a British soldier, and a playful yet violent Irish rebel casts light on the tensions between tradition and the terrifying prospect of independence, both political and spiritual. Based on the novel by Elizabeth Bowen. 1999, Ireland/U.K., 35mm, 103 minutes.
