Wondrously inventive evening of Victorian gore and ghoulishness"--The New York Times
One of the most bizarre and wildly entertaining music-theater works ever to leap off the London stage, Shockheaded Peter is based on the macabre 1844 children's tales by Heinrich Hoffman. The collective nightmare of Julian Crouch and Phelim McDermott (cofounders of London's Improbable Theater, a highlight of the 1999 Out There series), Shockheaded Peter features the underworld's favorite cabaret act, the Tiger Lillies, whose accordion-based, junk-band sound is anchored by Martin Jacques' beautifully eerie falsetto. Set in a stunning, two-story Toy Theater stage and employing inventive, large-scale puppets, this work is an uproarious send-up of Victorian theatrical mannerisms and illusion--a music box spinning out of control, an advent calendar with a different lunatic waiting behind every door. So sweet, so sinister--a black comedy for sophisticated children, their dreadful parents, and anyone who has ever sucked their thumb. Note: Performance is not recommended for children under age 10. See a video from the performance online at the Shockheaded Peter Web site (www.shockheadedpeter.com).
