A former torturer in Romanian prisons is ready to confess his crimes to
a journalist and a one-time political prisoner. Director Lucian Pintilie
started his film with two questions: How can the life of a torturer be
put on screen 10 years after the fall of Communism? What is the most interesting
part of his life--the darkest, that part that made him become a horrible
tool in the hands of the regime--or the human part, the part that made
him repent and pushed him toward confession, to the point of desperation?
2001, Romania/France, color, 35mm, in Romanian with English subtitles,
88 minutes.
