IRACEMA (IRACEMA, UMA TRANSA AMAZÔNICA)
Directed by Jorge Bodanky and Orlando Senna
An innovative blend of fiction and documentary, Iracema (an anagram for America) focuses on the plight of a young Indian woman who flees her Amazonian village to experience life in the big city. Working as a prostitute, she meets a macho trucker (played by the well-known actor Paulo César Pereio), who takes her on the road. Her abuse and humiliation begins to mirror the ruthless destruction of the Brazilian landscape as the couple travels the newly built Transamazonian Highway. 1974, Brazil, 95 minutes.
