SMASH-UP: THE STORY OF A WOMAN
DIRECTED
BY STUART HEISLER
In Susan Hayward's first starring role, she plays a nightclub singer
who exchanges her own aspirations for her husband's. As his Sinatra-like
singing career ascends, she descends into the bottle, until her husband
(Lee Bowman) begins divorce proceedings. Based on an original story
co-authored by Dorothy Parker, Smash-Up opens this year's Summer
Music and Movies series on a dramatic pitch, and earned Hayward the
first of her five Oscar nominations. 1947, U.S., BW, 16mm, 103 minutes.
