"This music... casts one of the deepest spells to be found in world
music. Period." -- CMJ
Vocalists in West Africa's Taureg society are considered guardians of tribal
history who disseminate important information and preserve the ancient musical
legacy of their nomadic peoples. Formed in the refugee camps of Bassikounou,
Mauritania, the West African Ensemble Tartit ("union" in Temajeg) creates
music that is at once deeply rooted in the traditions of the Taureg and
universal in its hypnotic, bluesy qualities. With a complex layering of
vocal effects and sonorities, the ensemble's traditional and contemporary
compositions are reflections of life. Don't miss this rare chance to experience
these vocal masters on their first, limited U.S. tour. Copresented with
Cedar Cultural Center.
