Abstract Expressionism
c 1945 - c 1962
USA
A movement that emerged in New York in the 1940s. The large-scale, abstract canvases have sweeping brushstrokes, large fields of color, and individualized forms that characterize each artist's personal expression. Also known as Action Painting and American-style painting. Less a style than an attitude.
