This bleak, disturbing film about growing older and more desperate presents characters who begin to realize their personal limits in the face of their failed ambitions. Jay (Mark Rylance, Angels and Insects) and Claire (Kerry Fox, An Angel at My Table) have weekly trysts during which they cross erotic but not personal boundaries. They do not discuss their lives with each other, but Jay eventually violates their agreement and decides to penetrate Claire's world. Directed by Patrice Chereau (Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train, Lucie Aubrac), this French-produced, English-language film won three prestigious awards at the 2001 Berlin International Film Festival, including the Golden Bear for Best Picture. 2001, France/U.K./Germany/Spain, 35mm, color, 119 minutes.
