In this sensational biography
of volatile social satirist Lenny Bruce (Dustin Hoffman), Fosse uses the
appropriately raw aesthetic of high-contrast black-and-white photography
and jump-cut editing. For his first nonmusical film, the director replaces
trademark song-and-dance numbers with striptease acts and dirty comedy routines;
interviews and a particular stand-up act are used to narrate scenes of Bruce's
development as a performer, his relationship with his showgirl wife, Honey
(an excellent Valerie Perrine), and the obscenity trials that made him infamous.
Fosse here crafts his most intimate and dramatically powerful film; in later
scenes, as Bruce has become debilitated by drugs, his routine becomes appropriately
awkward and strained. Hoffman presents his best work in this film, displaying
both his comic talent and intensity. Lenny was nominated for six
Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, and Actor, but
won none--it was, after all, the year of The Godfather, Part II
and Chinatown. 1974, U.S., B/W and color, 35mm, 111 minutes.
