FREE VERSE: RON PADGETT, LECTURE ROOM, 7:30 PM
With Ted Berrigan and others, Ron Padgett reinvented the New York School
of Poetry in the 1960s. In You Never Know, his most recent collection
of poetry, the comic collides with the elegiac. Padgett's books include
Great Balls of Fire and Poems I Guess I Wrote, and his translations
include Blaise Cendrar's Complete Poems (1992), Pierre Cabanne's
Dialogues with Marcel Duchamp (1971), and Guillaume Apollinaire's
The Poet Assassinated (1968), illustrated by Jim Dine. For this
event, Padgett will read from his new book.

MINNESOTA MASALA: GLOBAL ARTISTS IN THE TWIN CITIES, PART ONE, GALLERY

This two-part series of forums focuses on Twin Cities artists, both U.S.-
and foreign-born, whose art is actively informed by a global context.
Victor Yepez, E.G. Bailey, Moua Yang, Ranee Ramaswamy, and Doug Beasley
present their work and discuss their approach to traditional cultures
in an American context. Moderated by Hmong comedian-storyteller-rap artist
Tou Ger Xiong. Minnesota Masala is presented in partnership with the Center
for Independent Artists as part of its "Meet the Artist" series.

ÁLVAREZ BRAVO: PHOTOGRAPHER OF MODERN MEXICO, 1 PM
Over the past eight decades, Manuel Álvarez Bravo created an inventory
of photographs that articulate the rich layers of Mexican culture. Victor
Zamudio-Taylor's gallery talk highlights works--from the elegant and abstract
to ethnographic and narrative images--that capture the contradictions
