Mayor Joseph Riley

FREE TALK: PUBLIC FORUM: MAYOR JOSEPH RILEY: BUILDING A GREAT CITY: BEAUTY, POLICY, AND THE PUBLIC REALM, 4:30 PM, FREE, AUDITORIUM
Joseph Riley is the mayor of one of America's most beautiful cities: Charleston, South Carolina. For this talk, he discusses ways that the ideals of supporting innovative urban design, sustaining economic growth, and creating livable cities can be pursued as mutually beneficial matters of public policy. In 2000, Riley was honored as the first recipient of the Urban Land Institute J. C. Nichols Prize for Visionary Urban Development.

Joy and heartbreak are treated with laughter and compassion in this program of documentaries and poetic, experimental works by young women filmmakers from Minnesota. Originally scheduled in March, Girls in the Director's Chair is part of the Women with Vision film/video festival. Program length 70 minutes.

FREE TEEN PROGRAM: (UN)SCENE: DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP, 5-9 PM, FOR AGES 14-19
In this series of free workshops on the third Thursday of each month, teens have an opportunity to create artwork with professionals, learn about the history and current state of the arts, and see a Walker exhibition, performance, or film. This month's (UN)SCENE explores documentary photography with Keri Pickett. It includes an introduction to the medium, camera exercises, and a visit to the exhibition Catherine Opie: Skyways & Icehouses. Limited to 15 people. FREE TALK: BETTER LOOKING: FOR SHOCK VALUE ALONE, 6:30 PM
Contemporary art galleries often exhibit works that are intentionally provocative. Walker Visual Arts curator Philippe Vergne discusses the purpose of art that uses shock value to press a point. On a tour of Walk Around Time, he focuses on Charles Ray's Unpainted Sculpture (1997), an arresting sculptural work in the form of a wrecked car, and Paul McCarthy's Documents (1995-1999), which juxtaposes images of Disneyland and the Third Reich. Meet in the lobby.
