THE
WORKING CLASS GOES TO HEAVEN (LA CLASSE OPERAIA VA IN PARADISO)
DIRECTED BY ELIO PETRI
Petri's observational film attempts to capture the daily life of the proletariat
and the dehumanizing influence working conditions have on the entirety
of peoples' lives. Assembly-line worker Lulu (Gian Maria Volonte) alienates
his fellow laborers when his fast pace sets the quota. After joining a
union, he struggles with his identity in the midst of a strike. Winner
of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. 1971, Italy, color, 35mm,
in Italian with English subtitles, 125 minutes.
