STRAIGHT THROUGH THE HEART (MITTEN INS HERZ)

Adapted from one of Dörrie's short stories, Straight through the Heart marked the director's narrative feature debut. An impetuous young woman named Anna (Beate Jensen) takes up with a middle-aged dentist (Sepp Bierbichler) trying to recapture his spark. She provides ample excitement for her lover, although age, class, and gender differences impede communication between them. At one point, Anna tells the dentist, "You're the first man I've slept with and still called 'Sir.'" 1983, Germany, in German with English subtitles, 91 minutes.

NOBODY LOVES ME (KEINER LIEBT MICH)

Fanny Fink (Maria Schrader), a single woman on the verge of 30, has two obsessions--love and death. She lives in a high-rise populated by eccentric tenants, including full-time psychic/part-time drag queen Orfeo (Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss), who becomes her spiritual and romantic guide. "I think I got very close to the ambivalence of life, happiness, and suffering at the same time," Dörrie has said of this film. "The fact that this movie made people react in such a strong emotional manner is something that I'm quite proud of." 1994, Germany, in German with English subtitles, 104 minutes.
