VERSE: GAIL SCOTT, 7 PM, LECTURE ROOM
Montréal novelist/essayist/translator Gail Scott is
described by the Globe and Mail as "one of the most gutsy writers
around." Taking up issues of feminism, art, and political action in fiction,
she creates an impressive blend of feeling and thinking. Her new novel,
My Paris, is the diary of a disillusioned visitor to the City of
Lights, who assembles in her journal fragments of the present and past,
pieces of art, philosophy, herself, and the world outside. Scott's other
books include the novels Heroine and Main Brides, the story
collection Spare Parts Plus Two, and the critical work Spaces
Like Stairs. She coedits Narrativity, a Web journal sponsored
by the Poetry Center at San Francisco State University and devoted to
discussing new forms of narrative.
FREE VERSE IS COSPONSORED BY RAIN TAXI REVIEW OF BOOKS.

TOUR: BETTER LOOKING: BREAKIN' THE RULES, 1 AND 6 PM, MEET IN THE LOBBY
Many of the artists working
during the past 50 years have tended to push boundaries, break rules,
and in many ways stretch our idea of what art is. During the 1950s and
'60s, they experimented with new modes of abstraction; performance artists
of the 1970s challenged the viewers' notion of the static nature of art;
and practitioners today, like Kara Walker and Rineke Dijkstra, ask us
to reconsider the connection between the visual and the narrative. This
tour examines the many ways that artists have shaken up traditional notions
of art.
