EARTH
Directed by Deepa Mehta
This love story--set in 1947, in Lahore, India, as the country teeters
on the brink of self-rule--is told from the perspective of Lenny, an
eight-year-old Parsee girl from a wealthy nonpartisan family. The girl
witnesses the deep divisions that are soon to ravage India, ultimately
resulting in vicious bloodshed between the Sikhs, Muslims, and Hindus.
Lenny is cared for by her lovely ayah (nanny) Shanta, who, somehow amid
the terror, falls in love with a peace-advocating Muslim. Also vying
for Shanta's heart is the Ice Candy Man (played by the popular Hindi
film star Aamir Khan), who undergoes a chilling metamorphosis as a result
of the chaos. Mehta, director of the controversial Fire (1996),
seamlessly weaves these various layers into a complex, stirring film
infused with wonderful metaphors and an exhilarating musical score.
1998, India, in Hindi with English subtitles, 35mm, 110 minutes.
