Claire Denis' latest film, loosely based on Melville's novella Billy Budd, is a poetic meditation on masculinity and neocolonialism. Gorgeously shot by Agnès Godard in the desert flats of East Africa, the striking images of rugged terrain and sculpted male bodies performing military exercises have a breathtaking effect. Good Work was named one of the best films of 1999 by Film Comment. 1999, France, in French with English subtitles, 35mm, 90 minutes.
