CECIL TAYLOR QUARTET
FEBRUARY 19, 2000,
$23.50, $17.50 ($19, $14.25 WALKER MEMBERS)
TED MANN CONCERT HALL, MINNEAPOLIS
"Taylor's music ushered in
an era of bold jazz discovery. Two decades later, it is still called
'new music.' "
Original to the core, Cecil Taylor's take-no-prisoners
piano improvisation has remained inimitable for four decades. Playing
not only with his hands but also at times with open palms, fists, and
elbows, this firebrand jazz maverick is also an accomplished poet whose
verse reflects ethnic tongues and dialects. Martial arts, dance, and his
poetry are sometimes companions to his complex compositions and dense,
bluesy chord clusters. Taylor performs with the members of his new quartet:
Joe Locke, vibraphone; Santi Debriano, bass; and Jackson Krall, drums.
Copresented with Northrop Auditorium.
