WHALE RIDER

Directed by Niki Caro
The Whagara people of eastern New Zealand believe their presence dates back 1,000 years to a single ancestor, Paikea, who rode to safety on the back of a whale after his canoe capsized. From then on, Whagara chiefs have descended from the first-born male. Whale Rider, based on the novel by acclaimed New Zealand writer Witi Ihimaera, tells the story of a feisty girl named Pai, who proves her love--and leadership--with spirited intensity. Winner of the World Cinema Audience Award at Sundance 2003 and the People's Choice Award at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival, this film is Niki Caro's second feature. Print courtesy Newmarket Films. 2002, New Zealand/Germany, color, 35mm, 105 minutes.
