Critical Issues

Many people have difficulties approaching contemporary art. As an international, multidisciplinary, and diverse institution, the Walker has a unique and challenging role to play by presenting artists of unusual merit and exploring the issues that animate their work. Our Crossroads initiative will offer welcoming environments at the museum and within the community where the arts can serve as a bridge between and among neighborhoods.

Our Crossroads projects will require a new level of multidisciplinary program planning within the institution and with our community partners. Beginning in July 1999, the mobile unit The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly will travel to community sites and be used for a variety of artistic and educational programs. This structure is 50 feet in length and weighs 28,000 pounds. We have formed an internal working group with film, performing arts, and visual arts programmers, education and community programs staff, and registration and program services specialists. Walker staff will work with the Community Neighborhood Advisory Committee to identify community sites for this mobile art space.
