WALK AROUND TIME: SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION
Exhibition
GALLERIES 4, 5, 6

Free time. Real time. Historical time. Time to think. The thread that connects us to the past and the future, to our ancestors and our contemporaries--time and its complex, elusive, yet simple nature--has captivated generations of philosophers, artists, and scientists. In the new exhibition Walk Around Time: Selections from the Permanent Collection, the Walker Art Center explores this dimension, presenting a kaleidoscopic array of more than 100 paintings, sculptures, photographs, prints, drawings, installations, and videos created from the years 1917 through 2001.

Originating from a multitude of points around the globe, these works present a dynamic conversation across traditional temporal and geographical lines. A highlight of the exhibition, Kara Walker's new installation Endless Conundrum, an African Anonymous Adventuress, depicts the collision between historical and cultural influences and their outcomes within a sociopolitical context. Connections across time--the almost simultaneous shift from representation to action by the Japanese Gutai Art Association, the Viennese Actionists, and European and American Happenings artists--are examined as a whole. .

Visitors will find favorites by Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Chuck Close, Dan Flavin, Cindy Sherman, Jasper Johns, Francis Bacon, Alberto Giacometti, Yoko Ono, and others, as well as numerous works that have not been on view recently by artists such as Siah Armajani, Morris Louis, Lynda Benglis, Claes Oldenburg, and Sherrie Levine. Many new acquisitions will be featured, including an early collage by Ellsworth Kelly; a 1964 assemblage by the Swiss Fluxus affiliate Daniel Spoerri (dinner remains "frozen in time"); digital animations by French artists Pierre Huyghe and Philippe Parreno; and objects by Lee Bul, Huang Yong Ping, Thomas Hirschhorn, and others that stretch traditional artistic practice. The eponymous work of the exhibition--a newly acquired set designed by Jasper Johns during his tenure as artistic director for Merce Cunningham's dance company--Walkaround Time is an homage to Marcel Duchamp and his The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass). This installation and the accompanying performance, also shown on video in the gallery, are products of a multigenerational network of friendships and intellectual exchanges that cross media boundaries. In this way, and in the manner in which it simultaneously references and breaks with tradition, Walkaround Time embodies the concerns of the exhibition and points to the connections and rifts that converge to form the narrative of art in the 20th century.
