BARREN LIVES
(VIDAS SECAS)

Directed by Nelson Pereira dos Santos
In one of the most influential Cinema Novo films of the early period, Nelson Pereira dos Santos captures the desperate plight of people living in the northeastern Sertão region. An adaptation of the Graciliano Ramos novel, Barren Lives begins with the poignant image of Fabiano and Vitoria walking silently with their children and their dog through a dried-up river bed, trying to escape drought and famine. Drawing critical comparisons with Satyajit Ray and his Apu Trilogy, dos Santos gives astonishing insight into not only physical hardship, but also the deep-seated fears, taboos, and conventions that increase and compound suffering. Courtesy New Yorker Films. 1963, Brazil, 103 minutes.
