Chronicling 1970s Britain--from glam to punk--The Buddha of Suburbia follows young Karim, an identity-confused, mixed-race Brit disconnected from his Pakistani heritage, who eventually becomes an actor. His father is a lapsed Muslim who poses as a Buddhist guru for white hippies and yuppies seeking enlightenment; he soon leaves Karim's white mother (Brenda Blethyn) for one of his students. Meanwhile, Karim's part-time girlfriend is forced into an awful arranged marriage. Kureishi adapted his semi-autobiographical novel for this excellent BBC miniseries, which is rarely seen this side of the Atlantic. 1993, U.K., 35mm, color, 236 minutes.
