Inspired by the story of Cain and Abel, Daresalam presents a tale
of civil war in Chad in the 1970s. Farmers and workers take up arms against
an oppressive government; Koni and Djimi, friends since childhood, join
the revolutionary effort but take opposing sides when the rebellion splits
into factions. This film puts a human face on the vicious cycle of violence
that engulfs many African countries today and the unfathomable acts that
overwhelm all sides in war. Daresalam brilliantly weaves memory,
hope, and despair and "ends on a note of un-ironic optimism that is more
radical than all the calculated nihilism served up on Western movie screens"
(LA Weekly). 2000, Burkina Faso/France, color, 35mm, in Arabic and
French with English subtitles, 105 minutes.
