John Maeda is Associate Director of the MIT Media Laboratory, where he is also Sony Career Development Professor of Media Arts and Sciences, Associate Professor of Design and Computation, and Director of the Aesthetics & Computation Group (ACG). His mission is to foster the growth of what he calls "humanist technologists"--people who are capable of articulating future culture through informed understanding of the technologies they use. The ACG is an experimental research studio that was founded in 1996 as the successor to the Visible Language Workshop, which provides outreach to design and art communities in the form of workshops and events that introduce the underlying concepts of computing technology. Maeda is the author of the books Design by Numbers and the recently released MAEDA@MEDIA, a 480-page retrospective of his personal work, and he is the recipient of the DaimlerChrysler Award for Innovation. He will discuss his recent shift from design to fine art. A book-signing follows the lecture.
