Chain
Times Three, 2002
In this three-projector panoramic triptych, Jem Cohen creates a "superlandscape"
comprised of malls, highways, franchises, hotels, and corporate centers.
These images, shot over a period of six years, are presented in a manner
that merges documentary with narrative. Hints of stories and current events,
both found and invented, infiltrate the landscapes and explore ways that
people navigate an increasingly generic, commercialized, and simulated world.
Chain Times Three includes an original music score performed by Montréal's
Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Cohen has worked extensively with musicians
such as R.E.M., Elliott Smith, Jonathan Richman, Fugazi, and Vic Chesnutt.
In fall 2000 he introduced screenings of his film Benjamin Smoke
at the Walker. 2002, U.S., color, video, 41 minutes.
