"It is eclectic, tacky, gloriously messy, self-consciously
theatrical and full of surprises, whether it is a sudden trapdoor descent
or a collision of high and low culture. Here the intensely spiritual and
meditative sits side by side with the exorcist and disco glitter balls."
--The Guardian, U.K.
England's supremely inventive ensemble theater troupe (Shockheaded
Peter, 70 Hill Lane, Spirit) returns to the Twin Cities
with the tragicomic story of Edward Braff, an architect who dreams of
building a great cathedral but ends up suspended between heaven and hell.
Planted among the beams, ropes, and pillars are a peculiar troupe of performers
who tell the tale of the hapless hanging man, his unrealized potential,
and his hopeless--and hilarious--struggle to earn his death. Coproduced
by the Walker Art Center, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Wexner Center
for the Arts, the Lyric Hammersmith, and Wiener Festwochen. Copresented
with Theatre de la Jeune Lune.
SUPPORTED IN PART WITH FUNDS FROM THE ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION'S
MULTI-ARTS PRODUCTION FUND, THE DORIS DUKE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION, THE
WALLACE FOUNDATION, THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS, AND THE BRITISH
COUNCIL.
