OUR
LADY OF THE TURKS (NOSTRA SIGNORA DEI TURCHI)
WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY CARMELO BENE
Theater director-actor-writer Bene distinguished himself among the wave
of political Italian filmmakers in the 1960s through his formalist, non-narrative
approach. Adapted from his own novel, Our Lady of the Turks "departs
on a fantastic voyage, mixing mysticism and farce, provocation and sentimentality.
It is an outburst of eclectic, visual, operatic, and literary imagination,
demanding complete submission from its viewers" (Mira Liehm). Winner of
the special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. 1968, Italy, color,
35mm, in Italian with English subtitles, 125 minutes.

Massimo Bacigalupo, and Pero Bargellini. 1962-1972, Italy, color/BW. Program
