Lost in a maze. A flying frozen fish. Floating above Hennepin Avenue. A dancing fiddler. Memories of Grandpa. Echoes of Venice in Minneapolis. Love in the sky. The ice-fishing spirits.
Sound like a bunch of fairy tales? These are just some of the unexpected things that Twin Cities residents have experienced or imagined while navigating downtown skyways or enjoying some good old-fashioned ice fishing.
During a yearlong residency at the Walker Art Center, Catherine Opie made haunting photographs of the simple yet oddly beautiful houses that dot Twin Cities lakes during the winter ice-fishing season and the labyrinth of skyway tunnels that connect office buildings in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. To complement her work, Opie called for real-life stories, anecdotes, and poems from local residents who enliven those spaces. She received more than 75 submissions from mostly nonprofessional writers who range in age, race, and gender but find commonality in geographies that often define their Minnesota experience. Their submissions are presented here.
