People organize complexity to make it manageable. Like any
organizational scheme, this one is approximate. Some of these movements
were carefully defined by the artists in them such as CoBrA or El Paso; some such as Abstract Expressionism or the Bay Area Figurative Style are based on
groupings made by critics, curators, or historians. Many artists are listed in more than one
school; not all works by an artist need be in a single pigeon hole.
