TO DISCOVER:
TO MAKE KNOWN OR VISIBLE SOMETHING SECRET OR UNKNOWN; TO EXPOSE; TO DISCLOSE;
TO MAKE MANIFEST; TO CONFESS; TO DETECT THE PRESENCE OF . . .
Brazilian dance-theater artist Lia Rodrigues, celebrated for her clear-eyed
examination of her country's culture, has been a fearless leader of contemporary
dance in Rio de Janeiro since 1990. Such Stuff As We Are Made Of
is an immersive experience that celebrates the naked human body as both
a work of sculptural beauty and a vessel for complex spiritual, political,
and emotional desires. This striking work combines the cultural cannibalism
and irreverent political commitment of the 1960s/1970s Tropicalismo movement
with the hard-edged realities of 21st-century Brazil. Contains nudity.
