The streets of London are packed with angry protesters and the parties buzz with conversation from artistic and left-wing eccentrics. Accountant Sammy (Ayub Khan Din) and social worker Rosie (Frances Barber) share an open marriage and liberal politics. When Sammy's father visits from Pakistan, they also contend with his past as an unscrupulous politico. Sammy must reconcile his familial duties with his progressive attitudes as all the characters explore interracial romances. Costarring Roland Gift of Fine Young Cannibals as the enigmatic squatter, Victoria. "The film's comedy of manners isn't cynical so much as unsentimentally humanist. Which is to say that Frears and Kureishi aspire toward The Rules of the Game--as well as changing them" (Village Voice). 1987, U.K., 35mm, color, 100 minutes.
