How does an artist construct a portrait that reveals the person behind the well-wrought persona? Can they ever truly capture the real person? Three artists who pursue this slippery endeavor investigate these issues in their own works and those of other 20th-century photographers, painters, and writers. On June 6, poet Jim Moore discusses the literary portrait not as a way to literally transcribe a life, but to compose it. The following week, photographer Alexa Horochowski talks about the delicate balance between art and photojournalism. On June 20, figurative painter Stacey Davidson explores the flourishing arena of portraiture in contemporary painting. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Alice Neel.
