In this glittering backstage story, Malak is the queen of the Nile--or at
least of the Egyptian stage and screen--who falls in love with a social-climbing
scoundrel intent on becoming a star himself. Malak's producers and friends
warn her to be cautious, but she will not listen to them until they conceive
a plot to entrap her new love interest. Alternating between scenes of concert
productions, creative meetings, film shoots, and fantasy romances, Silence
. . . We're Rolling presents a glamorous entrée into the world
of superstardom and an entertaining all's-well-that-ends-well plot. 2001,
Egypt, color, 35mm, in Arabic with English subtitles, 108 minutes.
AFRICA CROSSING IS MADE POSSIBLE IN PART BY GENEROUS SUPPORT FROM THE BUSH
FOUNDATION. SPECIAL THANKS TO MAHEN BONETTI (AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL, NEW
YORK), SIMON FIELD AND SANDRA DEN HAMER (INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ROTTERDAM),
MARIANNE BHALOTTA (HUBERT BALS FUND), DESIREE MARKGRAAF (BOMB, JOHANNESBURG),
AND MARTIAL KNAEBEL (FRIBOURG FILM FESTIVAL).
