Dialogues:
Mary Esch/Daniel Oates April 20-July 13, 1997 The Walker presents the second of three exhibitions devoted to establishing a dialogue between the art worlds of Minneapolis and New York. Dialogues: Mary Esch/Daniel Oates features two figurative artists who investigate artistic form through the use of narrative and caricature. For this exhibition, both artists have created new bodies of work that extend the traditional motifs of the fairy tale. Mary Esch is a Minneapolis-based artist who makes drawings and paintings of highly stylized figures that inhabit mythical landscapes while enacting strange, dreamlike narratives. Daniel Oates is a New York-based sculptor best known for his cartoonlike "Happy Workers," a series of manual laborers that call into question the gap between this "happy" world and the drudgery of our everyday work world. |
