"It's precisely the music's rejuvenating qualities, the seductive, melodic rhythms and the simple but indelible beauty of the songs that have kept its players, now known in Cuba as "los superabuelos," the super grandfathers, as forever young as they seem to be."
--Los Angeles Times
Ibrahim Ferrer, who was front and center in the Walker's sensational evening with the Afro-Cuban All-Stars at First Avenue last fall, has a honeyed voice sustained by all the notes it has caressed in 72 years. Ferrer and pianist Rubén González, whose playing style helped invent the "Cuban sound" in the 1940s, were pivotal to the Buena Vista Social Club's Grammy-winning album and the center of Wim Wenders' recent documentary film on the group. The rich, remarkably influential Afro-Cuban sound of the 1940s and 1950s reaches its fullest, purest form with the gathering of these seminal musicians. Ferrer and González (on his first visit to the Twin Cities) join a 20-musician orchestra that includes the most sought-after members of the Buena Vista Social Club recording. Copresented with Northrop Auditorium as part of Northrop's 1999-2000 Jazz Season. For more information check out the Buena Vista Social Club Presents press release (8 October 1999).
