It took young French filmmaker Olivier Zabat about three years to finalize his authentic and gripping three-part video on facets of Rio's gang life. In the first segment, O lado certo da vida errada (1997-1998), four teenagers from a Rio favela who are members of a gang called the Red Commando claim on camera that their criminal activities are justified by their precarious living situation. They cynically confirm that they are living "on the right side of the wrong life." In the second part, Papa-mãe (1988), two men say they're Brazilian policeman doing "contract work to root out evil." The third segment, Disparos para o alto (1998-2000), is about a Brazilian evangelist who turned from the pulpit to a life of crime. 1997-2000, France, in Portuguese with English subtitles, color, video, 50 minutes.
