There are collectors and there are collectors. Lucky for you, we'll be exploring both types at this free Open House for Students. From culture jammers who stockpile tidbits of consumer culture and rework them for subversive ends to art lovers who carefully select new pieces for their collections at home, here's your chance to examine collecting in many of its weird and/or wonderful forms.

JOIN THE JAM, 7 PM
Craig Baldwin is a film pack rat. He collects discarded movie leaders, obscure filmstrips, and kinescopes of '50s TV shows--then edits them together into scathing critiques of media culture. Listen as he gives an overview of the culture-jamming movement. Auditorium.

SAMPLE MUSIC, 9-10 PM
Come hear the Plastic Constellations. Have a drink, enjoy the view, and open your ears. Gallery 8 Restaurant.

ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION, 5-9 PM
Take a chance to win the Book-of-the-Week, Gareth Branwyn's culture-jamming how-to, Jamming the Media. Walker Art Center Shop.

FREE FILMS, 5 AND 7 PM
So Wrong They're Right. Journey 10,000 miles across the United States in search of 8-track fanatics, or "trackers." Directed by Russ Forster and Dan Sutherland. 1995, U.S., 92 minutes. King of Porn. Meet Ralph Whittington, who by day works at the Library of Congress and by night applies Library of Congress standards to the archiving and cataloguing of his world-famous porn collection. Directed by Jeff Krulick. 1996, U.S., 7 minutes.

LOOK INTO OTHER PEOPLES' HOMES, 5-9 PM
Take a peek at The Cities Collect, an exhibition of art borrowed from the homes of area collectors. Or see the newest additions to the Walker's own collection in State of the Art: Recent Gifts and Acquisitions.

CHILL OUT(SIDE), 5-10 PM
Relax on the rooftop terrace, have a drink, and hang out with your friends. Gallery 8 Restaurant.
