Emerging Artists/Emergent Medium_02 is a second series of network-based artist projects commissioned by Gallery 9, Walker Art Center, made possible with the generous support of the Jerome Foundation.

What?

Up to three projects will be selected for presentation in Gallery 9, the online gallery space on the Walker's website (http://www.walkerart.org/gallery9). Projects by recipients of first round grants are linked from

When?

Proposals must be received by June 1, 2000. Selected artists will be notified no later than June 30, 2000. Commissioned projects must be completed no later than December 31, 2000.

Who?

The commissions are available only to "emerging artists." Because of the focus of the Jerome Foundation commissions can only be offered to artists who reside in the state of Minnesota or in the city of New York. Prior recipients of commissions from the Walker are not eligible.

How much?

The commissioning fee is $5,000. An additional amount of up to $2,000 is available for documented technical support costs. Hosting will be provided by the Walker. Artists will be required to present the projects in Minneapolis or at an alternative site, if mutally agreed, and will be provided with travel costs.

What else?

A writer and an interviewer will be commissioned to create a critical context related to the work. The artist agrees to facilitate the interview and the essay.

What else?

The completed project will be presented exclusively on the Walker website for a period of at least 12 months. The artist retains copyright to the work. The artist grants the Walker the non-exclusive right to archive and present the project in perpetuity. The Walker need not be the sole sponsor of the project.

The Walker's role?

It is expected that the artist knows how to get the project produced. The Walker is not a producer for the project. The Walker will provide hosting support for the project. Determination of writers is at the Walker's discretion. There will be no possibility of a physical interface in the Walker galleries, although a physical interface (beyond a standard network connection) is conceivable, with arrangement by the artist.

What are you looking for?

The Walker's mission is, in part, to be "a catalyst for the creative expression of artists and the active engagement of audiences." The goal of these commissions is to support emerging artists doing innovative work. Consequently, we are open to considering the unexpected, and not interested in narrowly defining "net art"--or the network. However, part of the application process is to explain how the proposed project is network-based and priority will be given to projects that use the network as a "necessary and sufficient condition."

How?

Projects will be selected by Steve Dietz, Director of New Media Initiatives.

Caveats.

Not all commissions will necessarily be awarded by June 30, 2000. Not all commissions will necessarily be selected from submitted proposals.

How do I apply?

Send an email with the following information:

1. In the subject header: "Jerome commission application [your name]"
2. Artist info including full name, residence address, email address, and short bio with links to online projects or project documentation.
3. A description of the project, including:
3a. project title and description
3b. why and/or how you consider it to be network-based art
3c. preliminary technical specifications and schedule (must be launched by December 31, 2000)

Proposals can be in the form of text in the body of the email, or an attached RTF file. The assumption is that online examples of work will be sufficient to review.
You may send slides, videotapes, and/or CD-ROMs separately, but only emailed proposals will be considered. Please note analog materials will NOT be returned unless prior arrangements are made. Otherwise, all materials received will be placed in the Walker archives.

Be reasonable. We will acknowledge receipt of all proposals. We will attempt to answer any questions via email. But if you submit 20 URLs or a 35-page proposal, you can imagine what will happen.
