DIANNE McINTYRE

LESTER BOWIE'S BRASS FANTASY

This new work unites the richly talented (but uncelebrated) choreographer Diane McIntyre and vanguard trumpeter-composer Lester Bowie. The project is inspired by African-American contemporary dance and avant-pop jazz traditions informing the artists' eclectic work. Both embrace tradition while simultaneously challenging what has come before. Composer-trumpeter and founding member of the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago, Bowie brings his irrepressible brass band to the Twin Cities for a collaboration with McIntyre, one of the most influential choreographers working in black dance today, renowned for her pioneering efforts at fusing dance with progressive jazz. The evening's performance will include several works from McIntyre's repertory performed by her six-member company, a set of music by Bowie and the Brass Fantasy, and the conclusion: the world premiere of a new work developed collaboratively with McIntyre and Bowie. The Walker will host a developmental workshop period in March; both artists and companies will be in residence for seven days rehearsing and developing the work as well as performing and conducting educational and outreach activities.
