In the wake of becoming a father, Kureishi scripted My Son the Fanatic, which might be noted as his first mature work--a story more sympathetic toward the middle-aged generation than the young rebels. In it, emigrant Parvez (Om Puri, East Is East) has spent 25 years driving a taxi to provide for his family, in whom he has so much pride that he gives his regular clients, including prostitute Bettina (Rachel Griffiths, Hilary and Jackie), updates on his wife and son's developments. When his son becomes a Muslim extremist and invites a Muslim leader to stay in their home, Parvez no longer understands his family's behavior and turns to the prostitute for compassion. 1997, U.K./France, 35mm, color, 86 minutes.
