For more than 25 years, Vito Acconci has produced provocative
interdisciplinary works of astute social criticism. Constantly pushing
the boundaries between private and public, he first became known as a
pioneer in performance and conceptual art. (His 1971 video Theme Song
is on view in Art in Our Time: 1950 to the Present
.) He now represents himself as Vito Acconci &
Studio, collaborating on proposals for buildings and parks that inevitably
turn the existing space upside down or blow it apart. Recipient of numerous
design excellence awards, his projects include the indoor park for the
Philadelphia airport, the plaza design for the University of Illinois
at Chicago, and seating and lighting for a transit corridor at the San
Francisco Airport.
Free Thursdays
